An Ion pump, also alternatively termed as a sputter ion pump is another type of vacuum pump used at pressures as low as 10-11 mbar under ideal conditions. The ion pump ideally ionizes the gas inside an attached vessel by employing a strong potential of approximately 3-7 kV increasing ion-accelerations to a speed enough to be captured by the anode. Ion transporters are classified as a super family of transporters that contain 12 families of transporters. They essentially function by creating a difference of concentrations and no wonder ion pumps are also called ion transporters because they transport ions from low to high concentration solutions.
Growth of ion pumps market is driven by the characteristic of ion pumps which finds itself useful in ultra-high vacuum systems (UHV) systems due to its ability to attain low pressures of 10-11 bars. The biggest growth factors for ion pumps are that they use no moving parts and no oil in comparison with turbomolecular pumps and diffusion pumps. They thus require less maintenance and produce no vibrations.
These growth factors give ion pumps an elevated status by use in scanning probe microscopy and other high precision apparatus. The Ion Pumps are used for training an electron beam generated from guns in columns and this principle is used in modern transmission electron microscope. Three main types of ion pumps are in existence. They are conventional or standard diode pump, noble diode pump and triode pump. The three pumps differ from each other in their cathode construction. One has only an active cathode while the latter has a chemically reactive cathode as well which is tantalum.
